Program Overview
The ICU Early Mobility Protocol is designed to combat Intensive Care Unit Acquired Weakness (ICUAW). Prolonged bed rest and mechanical ventilation lead to rapid muscle wasting and joint contractures. Our specialized critical care physiotherapists intervene early—often while the patient is still ventilated—using passive movements, respiratory therapy, and progressive upright positioning to accelerate weaning and improve long-term survival quality.
Program Phases & Activities
Phase 1 — Passive & Respiratory Maintenance
Protecting joints, clearing airways, and preventing complications while the patient is heavily sedated or unable to assist.
Key Activities inside Clinic
- •Chest physiotherapy (percussion, vibration, suctioning)
- •Passive Range of Motion (PROM) for all limbs
- •Positioning and turning schedules to prevent sores
- •Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) to preserve muscle
- •Splinting to prevent foot drop
