Dr. Karolin Rockson
PT (BPT), Ex. CMC - Vellore. Neuro-rehabilitation specialist focused on measurable functional recovery.
Post-stroke weakness (hemiplegia or hemiparesis) is the most common consequence of stroke, affecting one side of the body (face, arm, and leg on the same side, opposite to the stroke). The degree of weakness ranges from mild hemiparesis — reduced strength with preserved voluntary movement — to complete hemiplegia with no voluntary movement. Weakness after stroke results from damage to the motor cortex or the corticospinal tract connecting the brain to the spinal cord. Neuroplasticity — the brain's ability to rewire itself — is the biological basis for motor recovery. At Bethesda Physio & Rehab Clinic, we apply the most current evidence in stroke rehabilitation: intensive task-specific training, constraint-induced movement therapy for the upper limb, functional electrical stimulation, body-weight supported gait training, and mirror therapy. The quality and intensity of early rehabilitation are the most powerful predictors of motor recovery — and we are dedicated to providing both.
This symptom can indicate an acute neurological event (such as a stroke or severe spinal compression). Please seek immediate emergency medical evaluation. Once stable, intensive neuro-rehabilitation is recommended.
Any new weakness developing after a previous stroke requires immediate emergency assessment — this may represent a recurrent stroke or haemorrhagic transformation. Contact emergency services immediately. For stable post-stroke weakness, early referral to stroke rehabilitation physiotherapy (ideally within 24–72 hours of stroke onset) provides the greatest recovery potential.
Follow these conservative self-care steps while coordinating clinical review. Do not perform any activity that triggers sharp or radiating pain.
Begin rehabilitation as early as medically stable — even gentle movements in hospital
Perform prescribed exercises multiple times daily for maximum neuroplastic stimulus
Use the affected side as much as possible in daily tasks rather than relying on the unaffected side
Keep the affected limb positioned correctly to prevent joint contracture and shoulder subluxation
Celebrate each small improvement — neurological recovery is non-linear and ongoing
